How-To Organize Your Books
By: Janet L. Hall
I recall when I was in my early 20’s visiting a co-workers one-
bedroom apartment and every wall in every room was lined with
bookcases – full – from floor to ceiling. I had never seen that
many books in one place except for bookstores and libraries!
This week or month, depending on who or what you read is a
celebration of “National Book Week/Month” aimed towards
libraries, schools and children. According to the Association of
American Publishers (AAP) books sales for the US reached
$23.7 Billion in 2004
(
http://www.publishers.org/industry/index.cfm ), up 1.3 percent
from 2003; I’m sure Oprah loves this and I also – hopefully it
means more people are reading. It will be interesting to see what
2005 brought in sales, which aren’t available as of this writing.
However, while book sales increase so too does the
disorganization of books in ones home and/or business. Books
piled here, there and everywhere, never able to locate a book
when needed.
Organizing your books on shelves are easy, can be fun and the
best reward for organizing your books – you’ll know where a
book is when needed.
I like to keep my books organized by category and then by size
of book within that category; however you might like to look at
some different styles of organizing your books:
6 Ways to Organize Your Books on Shelves: 5 * equal
complicated to 1 * for easy:
1. Use the Dewey Decimal System - *****
2. Use “bookstore” categories - ****
3. Organize/Alphabetize by Author - ****
4. Organize/Alphabetize by Title - ***
5. Organize by Subject - **
6. Organize by book size - *
Keeping Track of your Books:
Perhaps you have bookshelves in more then one room or
building or you’d like to enter your books into a database or you
lend out your books however forget whom you have lent what to
whom. No problem, I’ve found some “cures” for keeping track
of your books:
Software:
Readerware is fairly easy to use if you are familiar with
computers, using a Drag and Drop function you can get an image
plus more into your database from the Internet, it enables you to
add location and offers loan tracking. Drag and Drop, Enter
Data or Scan ISBN’s (free scanner available) functions available
for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Palm OS devices. Tutorials
and 30 day trial available.

Book Organizer by PrimaSoft is for Windows only and you
enter your data. I found this software to be cumbersome and
time consuming. 30 day trial available.

Book Collector gets my vote, even through it’s currently for
Windows only; however they are looking for beta testers for
MAC users. Functions I really liked were instant download of
your book information from the Internet via data entry or
scanning, add location, notes and loan manager. Very easy to
use. Tutorial and trail edition limited to 100 books.

Unwanted Books:
While you’re sorting and organizing your books be aware of
ones that you no longer need, want, use or love and decide if
you would like to donate, give away, sell or trade them.
1. Donate - type “donate books” into your favorite search engine
and you will get a large list of places to donate to.
2. Give Away - check out
http://freecycle.org or your local
library.
3. Sell – visit
http://www.overhall.com/organize_books.htm for a
list of places we found via the Internet.
4. Trade -
