1. Welcome and Happenings
This is a wonderful month to take the time to reflect back on the
accomplishments you've made throughout the year and I want to
hear about them. Please send me an email to
mailto:janet@overhall.com and
share your successes with me and
your fellow subscribers. In upcoming issues I will post your
wonderful accomplishments.
It's also a great time to start planning on what you'd like to work on
in the upcoming year. I'd love to hear about those also. This will
also aid me in writing articles about what you are working on
and/or have challenges with. Come on now, don't be shy. I would
love to hear from all of you. Won't you take a minute today to write
me?
I hope you enjoy the continuation of our study of procrastination
and how it affects you and your challenges by reading all the
articles in this newsletter.
Paula Langguth Ryan and I finished our book, Effortless
Freedom From Clutter and Debt, which I hope you'll read about

2. Your Clutter Fears
By: Janet L. Hall
Since 1996 I have helped my clients face many fears with regard
to their clutter. They have real fears, just like you, and in no way
should be minimalized; however with some help and coaching
they have worked through and walked through their fears, and so
can you.
A. What is Fear?
>>Fear is a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the
presence or nearness of danger.
Many of my clients or people that have written and emailed me are
in danger or have lived in dangerous situations because of their
clutter. From tripping over a pile of clutter, causing them to break
bones to losing their jobs to having their children taken out of the
home - put into foster care.
Are you in Danger?
>>Fear is a feeling of pain.
Many of my clients find that going through their stuff, or stuff they've
inherited, a painful experience, one in which they don't want to
face, especially alone.
Are you in Pain?
>>Fear is a feeling of dread, which also refers to depression.
Many of my clients are depressed or become depressed in just
the thought, the anticipation of this disagreeable task of sorting,
making decisions, and de-cluttering. Many are living in dread that
if they let something go they might "need it someday." or if
they put something away they won't be able to find it when needed.
Are you Depressed?
>>Fear is also terror, fright and apprehension. Terror
applies to overwhelming, often paralyzing fear that can stop you
dead in your tracks from taking any action. You become paralyzed
when it comes to making decisions regarding your possessions,
especially if it's "important" paper work you THINK someone,
including yourself, might need. You continue to let things come into
your home, office, and life, piling up more and more, and unable to
do anything about it.
Are you Overwhelmed and Paralyzed?
Now panic sets in. Panic is unreasoning fear, that can lead to
aimless action. Non-focus!
You panic when some one stops by unexpectedly or unannounced.
Panic sets in when holidays come around. Panic sets in when
school is out. Panic sets in when you don't want anyone, your
family, friends, co-workers, or clients, to see your environment.
Are you in Panic mode?
B. What is clutter to you?
>>What is your perception or interpretation of clutter?
What is clutter to some is not to others. For example one client
had many nick-knacks neatly arranged around their home;
however the wife viewed this as clutter, the husband did not, these
were his collections. Another client had a few piles of papers, and
yet others you couldn't walk through the rooms!
C. Causes of De-Cluttering Fears:
>> De-cluttering fears can evolve from ignorance, which means
lacking knowledge, education, or experience when it comes to
dealing with or sorting through your clutter.
>>De-cluutering fears can evolve from mistakes. Mistakes-ah yes,
I've made a few and so have you; however you need to learn from
your mistakes, make mistakes to learn, and trust yourself to move
past your mistakes in order to move forward in life.
>>De-cluttering fears can be due to the possibility of
needing something again once you get rid of it or not willing to
take the chance of getting rid of items, "just in case." These
feelings make you feel uneasy, anxious or doubtful.
>>De-cluttering and getting organized is a process that can be
fearful and difficult. Fear and the consequences of what might
happen can paralyze you into not doing anything: procrastination,
non-action, and indecision.
Get quiet, take a few deep breaths and ask yourself the following:
>>Can you form a belief in yourself that you can get organized?
>>Can you gain the confidence in yourself that you can get
organized?
>>Can you be honest with yourself that you can take the necessary
actions and make the decisions of what not to keep, to keep, and
where to store so you can get organized?
>>Do you have the integrity to get organized?
If you answered yes then you have trust or are in the process of
developing trust; trust in yourself . You can now allow yourself to do
something without fear of the outcome.
Five Tips to Help You Walk Through Your Clutter Fears:
1. Get education to obtaining organizing, scheduling, and
environmental skills you feel you need to accomplish your goals.
2. Obtain the knowledge through coaching or training that you
need to accomplish your goals.
3. Start to work on the little things that will eventually lead to your
goals.
4. Admit the fear and actively take the action of working with
someone that can help you get past the fear.
5. Impose deadlines on yourself so you don't keep
procrastinating and living in fear.
The energy you are using to "mask" or cover up your fear -
nonaction - is and can be truly draining. However with trust and
action you will reverse your draining energy to one of positive and
uplifting.
Now this can be a bit of a "Catch-22."
Your fear and feelings might slow you down; however don't let
them stand in your way or become roadblocks. Look at them as
bumps in the road; we all have them. It's your perception of your
reality that creates "mountains out of mole hills."
Don't let your fears grow and overpower you - taking over
your life, and your environment.
Let go of your fears, and start trusting in yourself to make the
correct decisions, take the correct actions, and let go of the things
in your life that are causing you chaos, panic, and fear.
"Life is a decision. At any point in your life, you can decide
(italics) to act one way in spite of feelings urging you to go in
the other direction. When you believe in a dream, you need to
risk." --Henriette Anne Klauser, Write It Down, Make It Happen.
