2. 2003 Commitments
By: Janet L. Hall
===========================================
Many of you might find yourselves reflecting on your
accomplishments of this past year as this New Year starts to
unfold. While many of you might reflect on the things you
never got to do, or never got around to doing. Please don't
beat yourselves up about the things you didn't get to. Rather
enjoy this day, knowing you are still alive and that tomorrow
will hopefully bring a new day and beginning in which you
can start working on those projects you might have put on
the back burner or just forgot about.
To help you get started and on the right track we
came up with eight commitments to help you this year:
Eight Commitments for 2003
1. Take the time (SCHEDULE IT!) in the upcoming week to
make some goal-resolves
(http://www.overhall.com/goal_resolve.htm
) for yourself.
Remember that if you keep doing the same things you did
last year, you'll get the same results. If you really want to
change something you MUST be willing to try new things
and let go of the old way of doing things.
2. Make deals with yourself, such as "I will not watch my
favorite television program until the mail is sorted and put
away," or "I will not go to Happy Hour until my desk is
cleared off and all files are put back where they belong."
3. What will your attitude and perception be this coming
year? Tasks that you dread doing might SEEM like they'll
take all day, BUT usually, in reality, the task might take a few
minutes if you look at the task as a small bump in the road
instead of a mountain to climb. It's all in your attitude and
perception. Work towards a positive attitude everyday and
break your "mountains" down into smaller "bumps" and
time
yourself on how long a task REALLY takes.
4. RIGHT NOW, get out your new 2003 calendar and make
a commitment for one hour a week to work on a cluttered
area in your life. KEEP this appointment as if your life
depended on it, as if you had to go to the hospital to get
kidney dialysis to stay alive!
5. Invest in yourself by making "ME" appointments with
yourself for a special treat, and KEEP them! This could be as
simple as a monthly visit to a local spa to get pampered, a
soak in a bubble bath, a day out fishing or golfing, attending
a local community program, or a walk at sunrise or sunset.
ANYTHING that feeds you, nourishes you, and brings you
joy.
6. Decide what is more important to you: out drinking with
friends OR creating the life you only dream about, "Some
day…."; Being a couch potato OR getting up, moving, and
taking action towards your dreams, wants, and desires;
Running around with head cut off like a chicken OR begin to
plan and take control of how your day will unfold.
7. Be VERY discriminatory about what gets brought into your
home, office, and life. Learn to say "No Thank You" AND "I
really don't need that" to yourself and others.
8. Plan a week or month by using our NEW FREE easy to
use 3 W's To-Do Sheets - get yours NOW by clicking

3. Organizing Holiday Decorations
By Sue Becker-Professional Organizer
===========================================
As the hectic holiday season winds down, take some time to
organize your decorations so it will be a joy to decorate next
year:
~~ Weed out decorations you don’t use or don’t like. If there
are decorations you hang onto each year but never seem to
put out, it’s probably time to let go of them. If they’re in good
shape, but you just don’t like them, donate them. Otherwise,
throw them out. If you’re hanging onto them because they
have sentimental value, put them in a keepsake box rather
than with the decorations you use every year. Just be sure to
label the decorations or include a note with them that
indicates their significance. Keeping them separate from
your "ordinary" decorations will make it easier for you to
access and reflect on them whenever the mood strikes you,
and will create room for you to store the ornaments that you
do use all in one place. If you have decorations that
are sentimental, but you do use, keep them with your other
decorations, but make a note of their significance as well.
~~ Organize your decorations in a meaningful way. Think
about your decorating technique, and organize your
decorations accordingly. If you decorate room-by-room,
store the decorations for each room together. If you like to
put out similar decorations at the same time (e.g., all of the
candles, all of the window decorations, all of the garlands,
etc.), pack your decorations according to type. If you like
excitement and potential chaos, store your decorations in
any old manner and make a game of figuring out where they
go next year. You can cheat a bit by taking pictures of each
area of your decorated home to remind you of where things
go.
~~ Use containers to store your decorations. Covered
cardboard boxes work well as long as they’re stowed where
moisture won’t damage the contents. Covered plastic bins
are another good choice. Covers are important to keep out
dust and to make stacking easier. Make sure the containers
are of a manageable size and will fit in the area you will stow
them. Many general merchandise stores carry plastic bins
that are color-coordinated by holiday – red and green for
Christmas, black and orange for Halloween, etc. If the
containers you choose aren’t color-coordinated, you may
want to put colored paper or wrapping paper on the outside
to make it easy to locate the containers you’re looking for
when it’s time to decorate. No matter what type of container
you choose, make sure each one is devoted to a single
holiday. Putting decorations for more than one holiday into a
container will make it difficult to retrieve decorations for the
appropriate holiday.
~~ Pack your decorations so they won’t break. You can
purchase boxes with cardboard dividers or use egg cartons
for small decorations like Christmas tree ornaments. You
can also use divided boxes from a liquor store. The dividers
will keep the decorations from knocking into each other and
chipping or breaking. You can also wrap breakable
decorations in tissue paper or unprinted newspaper – the ink
from regular newspaper could rub off onto your decorations,
and most certainly will make a mess on your hands. You can
wrap holiday strings of lights around cardboard, wrapping
paper tubes, or tightly folded newspaper to keep the lights
from tangling and breaking. You can cut slots in the
cardboard and insert the strings into the slots as you wrap to
keep them from sliding off. You can also purchase special
reels to hold strings of lights at hardware stores and general
merchandise stores.
~~ Use special containers for special decorations. Artificial
Christmas trees and wreaths are two large items that may
not fit easily into a typical box or bin. You can purchase
special bags or boxes for these items at general
merchandise stores, home improvement stores, and other
stores that sell storage containers. You might also consider
putting these and other large decorations into clear plastic
bags (recycling bags or dry cleaner bags work well). If you
don’t have shelf or floor space to store these items, consider
hanging them from the rafters in your attic, garage, or
basement.
~~ Label the containers. Make it easy to identify what’s in
each container by labeling at least 2 of the sides as well as
the top – you never know which side will be facing you. You
can use a general description (e.g., "Christmas - Living
Room") or you can create a more specific list of the contents
(e.g., "Kwanzaa– candles for mantle, tablecloth for dining
room," etc.). In lieu of listing the specific contents on
each container, you might also assign a number to each
container and then create a separate list of each container’s
contents by number (e.g., "Box 1 – New Year’s decorations,"
"Box 2 – Eid decorations," etc.).
~~ Stow containers with retrieval in mind. Make sure one of
the labels is facing forward so it can be seen easily. If you
have decorations from several holidays, rotate containers so
the most current holiday is always the most accessible:
when putting away decorations for the most recent
holiday, put them in the back or at the bottom and move
containers for the next holiday to the front or top of the
group.
~~ Don’t let gift wrap get out of control. Have a specific place
to keep your gift-wrapping supplies, including wrapping
paper, ribbon, bows, tape and scissors. Having it all in one
place will not only make it easier to complete the task of gift-
wrapping, but it will also allow you to see if you have too
much wrapping paper or ribbon for any given event. If so,
make sure you whittle down your inventory before
purchasing more. There are many storage options for gift-
wrap supplies:
=> Stand wrapping paper rolls vertically in a box stored in a
closet or other out-of-the-way place. Use rubber bands, twist
ties, or one leg from an old pair of panty hose to keep the
rolls from unraveling. Store ribbon and bows in clear plastic
bags that hang nearby from a hanger or on a hook;
=> Put wrapping supplies in a box that will fit on a shelf or
under a bed;
=> Store items in a hanging holder made specifically for gift
wrap and supplies – hang it from a closet rod or on a hook in
the wall to make use of otherwise wasted space;
=> Store items in a drawer near the place you usually wrap
gifts;
=> Store holiday-specific wrap and ribbon with the
decorations for that holiday.
Although taking down holiday decorations can seem more
like a chore than an enjoyable task, you can make it fun by
involving family members and making it one of your holiday
traditions. You can also minimize the tediousness by putting
away just a few decorations each day over a period of time
rather than trying to do it all at once. Just be sure to take
some time to organize and properly store your holiday
decorations to provide assurance that you will continue to
enjoy them for years to come.
