1. Welcome Message
Happy New Year, Happy January, and Happy Days to all!
I know it's not easy trying to balance and maintain all the
areas in your life. It might seem even harder to try and
"OverHall" those areas but you have finally decided to take
control of them. Good for you! Give yourself a reward:
a pat on the back, a night on the town, a chocolate shake....
Here in OverHall IT! it is my hope to help you stop juggling
areas in your life around and help you "OverHall" the areas
that might have become cluttered, ignored, or put on
the back burner. I want to help you bring back into
focus the things that are important to you. I want the chaos
to stop for you and help bring you some structure and hopefully
some useful advice and systems so you can accomplish the most
important task...running your life!
Let's look at all the things you have to balance.
According to Dr. Don E. Wetmore of the Productivity
Institute in CT. there are seven areas in our life to maintain
daily balance: Spiritual, Health, Family, Finances,
Professional, Social, and Intellectual.
We'll be looking at those areas in the "OverHalling" and Balance
column.
I would like to thank each of you who have subscribed
and/or forwarded this newsletter to someone. I hope
all who read will learn and enjoy OverHall IT!
Okay, ready to start "OverHalling"?

1. OverHalling and Balance
-Healthy Questions to Help Make you Healthy
by: Janet L. Hall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Many people make New Year's resolutions, only to break
them within a week or a month afterwards.
Many people either do or do not set goals for themselves.
Some people have no idea how to set goals.
So, let's look at the difference between resolutions and goals.
"Webster's New World Compact School and
Office Dictionary" copyright 1994, offers these definitions:
~~ Resolution-1 the act or result of resolving something
2 a thing determined upon; decision as to future action
3 a resolute quality of mind
4 a formal statement of opinion or determination by an
assembly, etc.
~~ Goal-1 the place at which a race, trip, etc. is ended
2 an end that one strives to attain
3 in some games, a) the line or net over or into which
the ball or puck must go to score b) the score made.
Notice # 2 in each definition and let's use 'losing weight' as
our example. (I use this as an example because it is the
number one New Years resolution).
The statement. "I'm going to lose weight this year" doesn't
really have any meaning, focus, or structure.
The statement "I have determined that I need to lose weight
and will walk one mile three times a week so that I can wear
the new dress/suit that is too tight."
See the difference? See how the second statement has more
clarity and structure?
We have determined the problem, decided on the action
we want or need to take, and what end we are striving to attain.
This is the way to focus on a problem, make a resolution,
and set a goal.
Now I'd like you to get a notebook or make one that has enough
sections for each of the areas Dr. Wetmore has identified. In each
section write your statement of "goal-resolve".
"Goal-Resolve! What is this woman talking about?"
Goal-Resolve: a statement that determines a problem, what action
you need to take, and to what end you want to attain.
In this column for the next three months I will be focusing
on your Health Area.
Below is a list of the recommended traditional health tests
and exams you should have, listed with age and frequency
Some other vaccinations that you might need to add to your
list are:
~~Pneumonia shot at age 60 and again at 67
~~Hepatitis B for those of you that are health workers
or living with a carrier
~~Hepatitis A if you plan to visit Third World countries
diseases endemic to areas where you plan to travel
~~Lyme Disease if you live, work or vacation in high-risk
areas or are exposed to ticks for any length of time.
(The highest-risk states in the US are those in the
northeast, plus Minnesota and Wisconsin)
If you have children or grandchildren, please make sure
that they are getting their necessary and required shots.
Call your doctor, dentist, vision and hearing doctors today
and set up your appointments for yourself (and any loved
ones) for the year.
Schedule a date with a nutritionist and make sure you
are eating properly and getting the proper amount of
vitamin supplements. Nutritionist in my area charge
about $60 for the first visit. It was money well spent and
an amazing experience.
Talk with your doctor about exercise and what type is best
for you. It might be as simple as taking a daily walk.
If you're a business or SOHO owner, you MUST be
healthy to meet the demands that confront you on a
daily basis.
OverHalling your problem areas might be harder for you
if you are already tired, dragging your feet, achy, sore and
don't know what's wrong. OverHalling is not easy! It will
take time, commitment, energy, and strength.
Don't let getting healthy become a resolution that you
break or a goal that you never accomplish.
Make it a *Goal-Resolve*!
Next month-'What is ALL this *STUFF*-Home, Office,
and Car Clutter. Is it making you sick and how to handle
ALL that *STUFF*.
3. The Toothbrush Made My Nose Bleed!
aka: Tips for implementing family-focused
changes in the workplace
by: Brett Krkosska
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's 6:30 a.m. and all's well. I didn't have to be at work
until 8:30 a.m. Since my wife was leaving for work early, I
was on my own getting the kids off to school. Time enough
for a cup of coffee over the paper and a shower before
waking the kids.
It's 7:00 a.m. As I bent down to wake my five-year-old, I
noticed that his hair seemed particularly unruly. Closer
inspection revealed that yesterday's gum was today's new
hair sculpting sensation.
It's 7:30 a.m. As I stand over my son experimenting with
household products that double as gum remover, my seven-
year-old screams from the bathroom that the toothbrush made
her nose bleed.
It's 8:00 a.m. Obviously I was going to be late for work.
Since this would be my 3rd tardy in 6 months... a nice
little reprimand in my file.
Does the above story sound familiar? Perhaps you've
experienced an equally frantic scene in your own home.
Balancing work and family, especially child care, can be
quite difficult at times.
With many large companies having very strict and
unforgiving policies, is it any wonder so many people are
seeking a work at home lifestyle? Is it really so hard to
understand why corporate America loses millions of dollars
each year due to low worker productivity and high
absenteeism?
In a study conducted by the Ford Foundation, it was found
that morale improved and absenteeism dropped 30% when
employees were allowed to become work and family focused.
Additionally, customer response time was reduced and
project deadlines were met more often.
How was this accomplished? Simply by allowing employees to
implement changes based on their own ideas for a balanced
life. In one instance, more than half the employees in a
department of 240 changed their work hours.
Perhaps some of you find yourself trying to perform the
difficult juggling act of maintaining gainful employment
while also meaningfully attending to a family.
Why not try to affect some changes in your workplace? Why
not convince your boss of the benefits available from
letting employees become work and family focused?
Have the courage to suggest your ideas for improvement.
Most employers are hungry for ideas that improve work
conditions and employee morale.
Here are some pointers:
* Form a think tank and get ideas from the group on ways
to improve working conditions.
* Talk to people in other companies related to your field.
Do they have employee friendly policies? Get their
suggestions on making changes in your company.
* Talk to influential people in your company and ask for
their suggestions and support for your ideas.
* You are more likely to be noticed if it's apparent you
have thought your ideas through. Write a proposal
detailing your ideas, and request a one month trial period.
* Make sure you are clear how your ideas would impact
customers, employees, and the company. It's important to
demonstrate the positive effect your ideas would have in
all three areas.
* Stay open and be willing to accept more responsibility to
implement changes.
* Keep your immediate supervisor in the loop. Your
supervisor can be your most valuable asset.
These pointers should get your cause rolling. And don't be
surprised if you suddenly develop a large following of
supporters. That's when the ideas really get to flowing!
So what are you waiting for? If you have minor toothbrush
emergencies, and if your company is not work and family
focused...
.. why not WAKE UP your company, and show them what it's
like to "bring your family" to work!

4. Unseen Bugs
by: Janet L. Hall
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you think that your computer will never crash, never
get a virus, and always perform when you want it to...
Think AGAIN!
Maybe you've been lucky.
I took all the steps to ensure that my BIOS was Y2K
complaint and updated all programs to make sure they
were complaint for 2000 but I started getting errors around
the middle of December and I knew something was not right.
I immediately made backups of everything and scheduled
my computer guy to come over. Unfortunately my
computer crashed before he made it over and I had to unplug
everything and take my computer into the shop.
I had not one, but two viruses running around my computer!
Here's what happened to me, hopefully you will learn
from this and it won't happen to you.
~~ I thought my Virus Scanner was on all the time but
it wasn't AND it was the only program that I had NOT
updated!
~~ The shop had my computer for three days!
~~ My backups were also infected!
* I now have my virus scanner on ALL the time.
* I have it enabled to check system and email.
* I have added to my DAILY to-do schedule to check
for any new virus program updates and download them.
* I have set up my virus scanner to scan DAILY during
my downtime.
As part of my business I sell products and services
via the internet. I get notified via email when someone
has purchased a product or service. While my computer
was in the shop I kept thinking, "I don't know if anyone is
purchasing anything or if anyone is trying to contact me!"
A real eye opener!
I needed a backup system and quickly. I could never
justify purchasing a laptop (now I can) until those two viruses
started running around my computer and stopped me
from doing business for three + days. You see, after
I got my computer back, I had to reinstall ALL my software.
I also was told it might be better to use a different browser
and email package so I've been trying that out. I had to
re-enter several hundred email addresses to get fully
operational and then, wouldn't you know it, my phone
lines started acting up (that's another story)!
So, ask yourself these questions and if you need to take
action, schedule the date and time and DO IT before
the unseen bugs hit you!
~~ Do you have a virus scanner installed
on your computer? Find Out!
~~ Is it on? Find Out!
~~ When is the last time you updated your
virus scanner? Find Out!
~~ If you do business on the internet do you have a
backup computer? Buy One!
I never want to go through this again and I don't want
any of you to have to experience the "Horror" of the
unseen bugs.
~~Balance - that precious middle ground.
~~He who every morning plans the transactions of the
day and follows out that plan carries a thread that will guide
him through the labyrinth of the most busy life. The orderly
arrangements of his time is like a ray of life which darts
itself through all his occupations. But where no plan is laid,
where the disposal of time is surrendered merely to change
of incident, chaos will soon reign.
--Victor Hugo
Did you know:
~~Celery has negative calories! It takes more calories to
eat a piece of celery than the celery has in it to begin with!
well into OverHall IT!, please feel free to email it to me.
